BassTech International supplies Green Chrome Oxide, affectionately named BassCrOx, to the North American market. We strictly control our BassCrOx to a Hexavalent Chrome content of 5 PPM Maximum, with the typical value being non-detected. It has a wide variety of applications because of its excellent opacity, outdoor durability and heat fastness. Its hardness is also highly valued for surface finishing, where Green Chrome Oxide is used as abrasive components. It can also be used as base oxide to produce several other metal oxide-based pigments.
Industries who use Green Chrome Oxide
- Refractory
- Bricks, mortars, ramming mixes, gunning mixes
- Ceramic Tile
- Paint and Ink
- Glass
What is Green Chrome Oxide?
Chromium (III) Oxide is the inorganic compound of the formula Cr2O3. It is one of the principal oxides of chromium and is used as a pigment. In nature, it occurs as the rare mineral eskolaite. The conversion of chromite to chromia proceeds via Na2Cr2O7, which is reduced with sulfur at high temperatures:
Na2Cr2O7 + S → Na2SO4 + Cr2O3
The oxide is also formed by the decomposition of chromium salts such as chromium nitrate or by the exothermic decomposition of ammonium dichromate.
(NH4)2Cr2O7 → Cr2O3 + N2 + 4 H2O
The reaction has a low ignition temperature of less than 392ºF (200ºC) and is frequently used in “volcano” demonstrations.
